Mitch Steimel brings a different outlook through his non-traditional path to become Trilix’s newest interactive front-end developer. Mitch went to Iowa State University to pursue a forestry degree, but quickly realized there aren’t many forests in Iowa. So how did he become a web developer? “I was unhappy with the job I had and started teaching myself web development. I got lucky and was hired on at Trilix. Success is a winding path, right?” We are excited to welcome Mitch to the Trilix team.

Where are you from?
I’m originally from Cedar Rapids but currently live in Newton.
What made you interested in web design and development?
A developer friend of mine suggested I give web development a try. I started learning HTML and CSS, and I didn’t want to stop. Memories of a trimester development course I took in seventh grade that I really enjoyed flooded back to me. Memories of the weird teacher I had did too, but I don’t dwell on that.
If you didn’t work in design, what would your next career path be?
If I get to pick from the litter, a writer of fantasy novels, in particular.
New year, new you. What’s your resolution for 2018?
Outside of the clichés “eat healthy and exercise more,” be a smarter consumer and be more knowledgeable about where my food and material goods come from.
Favorite meal or restaurant in Des Moines?
Jethro’s “nachos” are pretty hard to resist, but that could just be the cheese.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs for sure. I’m sure you can tell by the fur all over my coat.
Who would you most like to have dinner with, dead or alive?
Tom Hanks seems like a pretty interesting guy.
You can only watch two movies the rest of your life. What are they?
Step Brothers and Cast Away.
Tell me something no one could guess about you.
I’ve been to over a dozen countries and spent three months in China one summer. I also speak zero Chinese. It was an interesting three months.
What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
How to Play Dungeons & Dragon: 5th Edition.
