Our Communications/PR team continues to grow with the addition of new Senior Communications Specialist Megan Garrett. Megan grew up in Stuart, Iowa, a small town southwest of Des Moines that she jokingly calls “home to 1,700 good eggs and a few stinkers.” Megan graduated from Northwest Missouri State University (“Go Bearcats!”) before embarking on a career in journalism, first covering the overnight crime beat. Megan went on to take various reporting and editing roles at print and online publications in Missouri before joining the CBS TV affiliate in mid-Missouri in a sales and marketing capacity.
The change in professions opened Megan’s eyes to a new career path. “It helped me see what pieces of each role I was passionate about, and when I put the pieces of the puzzle together, it pointed to PR. So, I found my way into PR for a health care system.” Eventually, Megan’s husband’s job brought them back to central Iowa, where she became the corporate communications and media relations manager for Iowa Student Loan for five years prior to joining Trilix.
Attracted by “the opportunity to work with a staff of like-minded, creative individuals who each have a similar passion for public relations, marketing, communications and bettering businesses,” Megan leapt at the chance to join our communications team. “I knew there would be no way I’d be bored at a place like Trilix,” she noted. “I found this role appealing because I’m able to combine all my favorite aspects of previous trainings and roles into one fun skill-set that I use each day to serve my clients — media relations, marketing, public relations and communications.”
Megan was kind enough to sit down for a Q&A to help us get to know her a little better. Read on if you’d like to learn how Megan became a McDonald’s Olympian…
What do you like to do in your free time?
Free time? What’s that?!?! I have a wonderful husband, adorable (but busy) daughter and three spoiled dogs who all keep me very busy. Any time I can spend with them, no matter what we’re doing, is my favorite.
Do you have any unique hobbies?
My husband and I own our own small business doing woodworking and home remodeling. We’re always busy building things, painting things, creating things — the masters of DIY. My husband and I also enjoy pheasant hunting across Iowa in the fall/winter with our dog Jayde.
What is your favorite type of food or restaurant in Des Moines?
Having spent some time living near Kansas City, my family and I really love good KC-style barbeque, so Smokey D’s and Wobbly Boots are pretty frequent stops for us. But we also enjoy flights and food from Iowa Taproom.
If you didn’t work in this industry, what career path would you choose?
I really enjoy helping my husband be a small business owner and the collaborations we work toward with other local businesses. So, maybe economic development or working for a chamber of commerce.
Tell us something no one could guess about you.
I am a former medalist in the McDonald’s Olympics. It’s a long story, but my first job was at McDonald’s, and my coworkers and I competed in their national competition as a drive-thru team. We advanced through several rounds, including traveling to Minnesota for regionals. I medaled as drive-thru presenter (and yes, there are a lot of things that go into being a presenter that I was judged on.). Silly, I know.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Ziplining in Belize! Or diving in the Great Barrier Reef (as long as several people were on shark watch!).
Cats or dogs?
Favorite summer vacation spot?
Each summer, my family rents cabins and takes campers to Lake Icaria, near Corning, Iowa, for several days of relaxing, boating, fishing and FOOD. This summer may lead to new favorites as we now have our own camper and several fun, long-distance trips planned.
I have absolutely no idea why, but I really love the movie “Twister.” Not long after it came out, I had convinced myself I wanted to be a meteorologist or storm chaser.
