What does a creative agency build for an organization that can construct anything? Answer: a website for Master Builders of Iowa.

Trilix recently completed a new website for Master Builders of Iowa, the state’s leader in the construction industry. Our past projects with MBI have included a phone app and a career exploration site called BuildIowa.org, meant to explain the paths to professions in the construction industry. Our most-recent work culminated in a clean, inviting and informative site.

The MBI main website makes it immediately clear to viewers that the organization values its members. Video on the home page featuring those in the construction industry training, working and networking draws the eye. The organization’s mission — to be the “essential resource for improving member performance and promoting a business environment favorable to the construction industry” — is the second feature to greet site visitors.

The design challenge for our Interactive Department was to balance the amount of necessary information and supporting pages without the site looking cluttered, said Jason Wells, Trilix account manager. The main MBI site is a resource with information on membership, industry education, workforce development, governmental affairs and more. Supporting sites include a job board and a training vault.

“One of the biggest trends in website design is less copy, bigger pictures so it’s more engaging to the eye."

“One of the biggest trends in website design is less copy, bigger pictures so it’s more engaging to the eye. They have a lot of important content they do need on their website,” Jason said. “To present that in a clean and more sophisticated design was definitely a big point. Great photography, video and graphic elements were needed to make the design pop.”

The main site features a scrolling banner of MBI members’ company logos, photos and videos that break up text. Expanded quotes make text-heavy pages visually appealing, as do text boxes with borders that highlight when visitors hover over them. Bold red, black and white colors complement each other throughout the site. Text boxes again play an important role on the “Our Services” tab of the site, which includes links to pages with project bids, professional development, government affairs and safety tips.

The new website was launched about a week before Master Builders’ annual Winter Conference at the end of February. The client said they received much positive feedback.

The website was just one of the projects we’ve completed in the past year for the client. Other projects included making updates on a training website and creating an app for the organization’s members. We can’t wait to complete future projects with MBI.
