Commonly and incorrectly thought to be a celebration of Mexico’s independence, Cinco de Mayo actually memorializes a Mexican victory over the occupying imperial French at the Battle of Puebla, an underdog triumph that boosted the nation’s morale…despite being rendered meaningless by subsequent French victories less than a year later. Historical inaccuracies aside, for most Americans, Cinco de Mayo is an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture through food, drinks, music and dancing.
At Trilix, our Interactive team organizes annual Cinco de Mayo fun for the whole company. This year’s celebration fell on Friday, May 4, which to Star Wars fans everywhere was also Star Wars Day 2018. Naturally, we donned our sombreros, grabbed our light sabers and said, “May the cuatro be with you!”
This year’s festivities featured plenty of Star Wars apparel and theming along with an epic buffet of epicurean delights. The kitchen was stocked with what Unkar Plutt would describe as at least 100 portions of delicious south-of-the-border cuisine. Highlights included authentic salsas verde and roja, pico de gallo, shredded chicken, pulled pork, ground beef, refried beans and, of course, margaritas.
Senior Interactive Designer Jeremy Koppin said one of the Interactive team’s goals this year was to kick up the food’s overall spiciness. We did not fear the heat, for fear is the path to the Dark Side. Those who struggled with the picante flavors brought balance to the Force with soothing sour cream and guacamole. “Help me Obi-Wan Guacamole, you’re our only hope!” cried out Senior Copywriter Tucker Vasey. Finally, by the time Jeremy started to regale the group with the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, it was time to get back to work! Until next year, que la Fuerza te acompañe!
